NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Service NSW is working with industry bodies to deliver the program.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Do you have a great idea to improve your area?

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

Project applications close 15 May 2019.

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

It was a great day out despite a very cold start which had all of us wondering if we'd brought enough warm clothing. As it turned out, the sun shone through and the day was sunny and pleasant once we got going.

We met Uncle John Oates at Staples Lookout where he gave us an overview of the country and how to connect with it through learning its stories.

Not long after, we headed south to walk into the bush and learn a little bit more about the petroglyphs (engravings) that abound in the area.

Uncle John was able to tell us about the meanings of the petroglyphs. This gave us a deeper insight into connecting to country. Not only for Aboriginal people but, us as well.

From there we travelled to the Bulgandry site. There, we had the opportunity to learn about the traditional use of fire to manage country. We also learnt about the issues involved with conserving Aboriginal heritage.

Lunch at Somersby Falls saw us discovering evidence of Aboriginal occupation of this site for countless generations. We also enjoyed a great walk to the bottom of the falls.

Pretty hungry, we got stuck into our lunch where we were joined by some very persistent brush turkeys and a somewhat shyer lyrebird.

Can't wait for our Yengo camp in term 3!

Information notes went home today (Monday 29th of May) with Year 11 Students regarding their Year 12 School Leaver Jackets 2018.

In order to have the jackets ordered for term 4 for the start of Year 12, payments and ordering needs to commence. Information note attached.

Payments for the jacket are open from the 5th of June at the front office or online through the parenting payment link link on the school website (quote the number 160 748).

Payments must be in by the 4th of August.

No late payments will be accepted under any circumstances.

Tell Them From Me

Tell Them From Me is an online survey system devised by The Learning Bar that helps schools capture the views of students, teachers and parents.

The Department of Education, through the Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation (CESE), has engaged The Learning Bar to offer its student feedback survey, its Focus on Learning teacher survey and its Partners in Learning parent survey to NSW government schools. This follows a successful pilot of the student survey undertaken by DoE in 2013/14.

Parent Survey

The Partners in Learning parent survey is part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys on student engagement. The parent survey helps to clarify and strengthen the important relationship between parent and school.

How does it work?

The survey is anonymous and can be used either as a one-off survey or over time, with the ability to identify trends within schools and better inform school priorities. The survey is held once a year in Term 3 and is run at the same time as the teacher survey and the second optional student survey. The survey is conducted entirely online at home or or on public computers during the specific survey window. The survey takes around 15 minutes to complete. Schools are provided with a unique URL which they provide to parents to log into the survey. School leaders receive their school's data within three business days of closing the survey.

What does it ask?

The parent survey asks parents/carers a range of questions related to the following drivers of student outcomes:

HEADSPACE SCHOOL SUPPORT EVENING FOR PARENTS

Headspace School Support will be facilitating a parent information evening. The session will present information on identifying the warning signs of mental ill-health in young people, tips and strategies regarding how to talk to young people about their mental health (particularly when they often avoid the subject). Local services and referral pathways for support will also be discussed, with an opportunity to ask questions of the visiting headspace consultants".

Kariong-Somersby Falls Aboriginal Studies Excursion

On the 29^th of March, the year 11 Aboriginal Studies class had the privilege of participating in an excursion to the Aboriginal Petroglyph sites near Staples Lookout. The excursion was led by Senior Elder Uncle Paul Gordon, an extraordinary man whose knowledge about Aboriginal culture and the importance of country was of extreme value to our class.

Uncle Paul took us on top of a ridge to where the Aboriginal Petroglyphs were. Here we began to recount a journey of spiritual and cultural significance to the Aboriginal people belonging to that particular country. We also were deeply moved by the vast bushland that surrounded us and realised just how special the land that we walk on everyday really is.

Uncle Paul told us the meaning of the carvings, and taught us the significance of Aboriginal ceremony. Many of the carvings depicted animals, however, as the Aboriginal Peoples are connected to all inhabitants of the earth, the animals represented the people, and the alliance of all clans coming together as one.

After this, we were taken to another Aboriginal site called Bulgandry, where we saw petroglyphs which showed a variety of different animals, and even spirits. This showed the innate connection to all people, animals, plants and spirits within the Aboriginal People.

Finally, we finished our excursion at the beautiful Somersby Falls, which had evidence of Aboriginal grinding grooves in the rocks of the falls. This experience further taught us about the natural beauty of Australia and how Aboriginals had lived in such – as Uncle Paul describes – and idyllic place.

The excursion was something that our class will always hold value to. It had made us realise the deep significance of the country we walk on every day and how sacred this place really is. It was one of the most important lessons we have gained, and that this is a closer step to educating people about the importance of Aboriginal peoples' connection to country.

Major Works are progressive assessments that students work on across the HSC year and can contribute up to 60% of a student's final course HSC mark. To support students with major works

The Entrance Campus hosting the second of our special support day, called Consolidation Day, whereby students have the opportunity to spend the entire day with their major works teachers.

The aim of this support initiative is to provide students with one-on-one time with their teacher(s) to work on their projects for a day and to also work together to explicitly plan what needs to be done by students over the upcoming break to ensure that they are on the front foot when they return to school.

Consolidation Day will be held on Friday 8th April 2016, 8am-2pm. Please note that we have intentionally not scheduled mid-course exams on the last day of term to accommodate this valuable initiative, so all major works students are expected to be at school to actively take part in Consolidation Day. We ask that you support your child and the school by encouraging your child to attend.

We also ask that you support your child by actively encouraging them to keep working on their Major Works projects over the upcoming break to meet goals set out in their on-on-one time with their teacher(s). If you have any enquiries regarding Consolidation Day, please contact the school.

NRL Indigenous All Stars Youth Summit

Our students are interacting with other young leaders through a series of workshops, activities and discussions. Stevie, Dane and Raymond are developing skills that allow them to become strong leaders within their respective communities. On Tuesday 15 September, Mr Herder and Mrs Brown accompanied seven Year 11 students to Coast Shelter, Gosford to prepare lunch. The students were Dale Patterson, Brock Moore, Jacob Williams, Jon Whyte, Shaye Kidd, Courtney Farrugia and Jarrad Lambert. The students donated much of the food that was prepared for those less fortunate in the local community. The students worked well together as a team, making their guests feel comfortable. They acquired excellent feedback on their lunch with one gentleman commenting it was the most delicious baked cake he had ever tasted on his regular visits to Coast Shelter – thanks Shaye and Courtney.

Avid Subject Selection Visit

Congratulations to the following Year 11 students who visited the Berkeley Vale Campus Year 10 AVID class today to share advice for their upcoming subject selection: Calah Desborough, Kirsty Pasmore and Shannon Sattler.

The girls were confidently able to communicate the expectations of different pathways and subject choices. They spoke encouragingly of their experience at The Entrance Campus and how they were able to transfer the AVID skill set learnt in the junior campus across to our senior setting.

Just a quick update with a few of our College teams.

Girls Basketball - Won their first round match. Congratulations girls.

Boys and Girls Tennis - Our contingent of Tennis players both won their opening rounds on Monday despite being watched and leered at by a group of elderly gentlemen that had set up camp next to Bateau Tennis courts and were halfway through a case of VB at 9.00am. Well supervised by coach McGill (make sure you put that one in your next risk assessment please!!)

Boys Volleyball - Supercoach Roberts' hard work in after school training has paid off. A hard fought 3 sets to 2 win against Wadalba today reinforced what a bad decision it was for Sawyer to leave The Entrance. We now go into the 4th round to play Kincumber or Pennant Hills.

Boys Touch - Superer coach Williams lead the College touch team to a 15 - 0 thrashing of Northlakes yesterday. Early indicators are for a very strong team that could go all the way this year (no pressure Adam).

The girls touch team also won on Wednesday 15-0 against Cheltenham.

Good luck to all sporting teams in their next rounds...

Year 12 English Studies students participated in a Mock Interview Program at Tumbi Campus on 5th September. The students were trained in interview skills at Wyong TAFE prior to being interviewers on the day. Year 8 students were asked a range of questions related to applying for a Retail job.

Well done to Year 12 for their school service and for taking up the opportunity to up skill for interviews before leaving school.

Yesterday Chelsea Byrne, Codie Orman, Maddison Sullivan, Mikalah Fahey, Isabelle Kelly, Shaniece Nathan, Shaylee O'Hagan, Amanda Thomas and Sarah-Jayne Liedberg represented the college in open girls rugby 7s.

The girls skills, determination and competitive spirit resulted in them becoming undefeated central coast champions. Isabelle Kelly, Shaylee O'Hagan and Mikalah Fahey were outstanding in defence and attack. If you see any of these girls today/ tomorrow (most of the girls are representing the college again in touch football today), congratulate them as they were very proud of their efforts. A special Thank you to Keatyn Davies (TUC) for assisting on the day.

Trip report Ten Mile Hollow

Recently students from the Entrance Campus participated in a two day hike in Dharug National
Park. The hike was approximately 30km and went past some significant Aboriginal
and early settler heritage sites including Clares Bridge ruins. (Second oldest
bridge in Australia). Students camped at Ten Mile Hollow enjoying the peaceful surrounds.

The program is used to develop life effectiveness skills in the areas of time
management, social competence, and achievement motivation, intellectual

flexibility, task leadership, emotional control, active initiative and self-confidence.

FANTASTIC HSC RESULTS

Congratulations to the "Class of 2013" on their terrific HSC results!

There were 30 Band 6 results (double the 2012 number) across 15 subjects from 25 different students showing the depth of abilities and efforts. There were also 177 Band 5 results which is also an increase on 2012.

Congratulations must go to Nathan McGuire who achieved Band 6 in Earth and Environmental Science 92, Maths 92, Music 91 and PDHPE 91, while Georgia Jacobs achieved Band 6 in Food Tech (90) and Textiles and Design (91). A number of other students did really well and achieved results that reflect their abilities and efforts.

School year ends and retiring staff are recognised

The 2011 school year has now come to an end and students and staff are on their Xmas break.

We have a few staff retiring this year and I want to pay a special tribute to:

Howard Moore - he has beenat The Entrance for 22 years as a teacher and relieving Head Teacher, Year Adviser, organiser of assemblies, formals, graduations - everything!

Mick Garaty - an extraordinary teacher of Maths, Mick has been here for 37 years and has probably taught some of our current student's grandparents!

Phil Andrews - Phil is also well known in the community through the Rugby League, but he has been here for 30 years in the Social Sciences Faculty. Phil has also been a Year Adviser and major contributor to life at The Entrance.

Cheryl Byrne - as a teacher in the Annex, cheryl has had an outstanding career and has made a real difference to the lives of students.

Outstanding HSC Results

Our Year 12 students have yet again gained some outstanding results and ATARs in 2011.

Dux of the College - Tamara Scholl - achieved 4 Band 6 results and an ATAR of 97. This should give her access to just about any course at University that she wants!

Kiri Sieczkowski, apart from gaining 1st place in the state in Construction, also got 4 Band 6 results and an ATAR of 94.35.

Congratulations also go to Matt Jessup, Tanaya Lowden, Sarah Perry, Kaitlin Beattie, Hannah Wells, Allie Hawkins, Coral Hardwick, Bianca Seal, Tayla Williams, tyne Wilkes, Ellie Hughes, Rhianna Gymellas, Maddison Murrell, Jake Cozens, Jacqui Law and adele McMurray who also gained outstanding levels of achievement and ATARs.

Well done to all students - our Honour Board in the Foyer will have a few names added to it in 2012!

Kiri is 1st in State!

Congratulations to Kiri Ski for gaining 1st place in NSW in the HSC Construction Exam!!

Kiri has been one of our Vice Captains in 2011 and has used her interest and enthusiasm in Construction, along with a desire to do her best in the HSC, to achieve an outstanding result. Kiri has completed the course through TAFE in Year 11 and through the school in Year 12 and we congratulate her on this outstanding achievement.

As one of our vocational students, Kiri also gains Certificate II in Construction Pathways. This could lead to a wide range of courses at University such as Construction and Project Management.

Lion's Youth of the Year

Our Year 12 students have recently taken part in the Lion's Youth of the Year public speaking competition. Local Lions at Chittaway Bay, Shelly Beach/Bateau Bay and The Entrance have all hosted dinners where students have had to present a 5 minute prepared speech and answer 2 unseen questions in a 2 minute time limit.

Congratulations go to Emily O'Brien and Zoe Copland who have progressed to the next round to be contested in 2012.

A big thank you goes to our local Lions for organising and hosting these events.

Yr 12 Geography go to Dorrigo

As a compulsory part of their HSC course, Year 12 students recently completed their field trip to Dorrigo National Park to study ecosystems. Accompanied by Mr Andrews and Ms Badior, students completed a variety of activities including the impact of humans on the natural landscape.

"This sort of field work is really important in developing student's understanding of our world and it also gives them a good case study," said Ms Badior.

Health Expo a huge success

This year's Health Expo, put on by Year 12 PD/H/PE students has been a huge success. Operating from 8am until 12 noon, students from the Campus and neighbouring OLR visited the many booths and stalls to learn about a wide variety of health related issues.

Remembrance Day

The Entrance Campus were asked to deliver the main address at this year's Remembrance Day Service at The Entrance Cenotaph. Year 12 student Rachael Emde volunteered to give the speech on "The Unknown Soldier" and she did it in great style. Rachael prepared her speech with some assistance from Ms Patterson and covered this very sensiteve topic very well. She talked about the major battles of World War 1 and how modern technology is helping to identify soldiers who were buried in mass graves. The audience were very appreciative of rachael's address - well done!

Last Wednesday we had our academic assembly to celebrate the completion of the Preliminary HSC. Many students received awards for academic excellence or achievement in all of our subjects, while others received sports awards.

Assessment for Yr 12 2010 - 2011

At the "O Day" for our Year 12 students, the assessment program was explained and given to all students.

School-based assessment counts for 50% of the HSC (the other 50% is the HSC Exams).

All students and parents should be fully aware of the requirements of this important component.

Subjects for Year 11 in 2011

For students enrolling in Year 11 in 2011, there will be 56 subjects offered at this Campus!

We have now determined our patterns and subject lines.

In order to run a timetable like this, some classes will be offered in a "Line 8" that will operate on Mondays from 2.10 - 3.55pm and on Wednesdays from 1.30 - 3.25pm. Students in these classes will be informed at our Yr 10 - 11 Information Night on Wednesday 10 November.

Pathways to the HSC

In 2011, The Entrance will offer 6 pathways to the HSC and beyond for students enrolling into Year 11. These include:

Academic HSC - for those wanting to go to University, this pathway gives you the ability to specialise in sciences, technology or the humanities, Students can enrol in subjects that interest them and set themselves for great results in the HSC and an ATAR to get them into the University course they desire. Don't forget that the University of Newcastle also gives our students 4 bonus points in the ATAR for entry to most courses.
HSC - for those students who aren't quite sure yet what they want out of Years 11 and 12. Students should enrol in Board Developed Courses (those with an HSC Exam) that interest them.
Vocational or Job Preparation pathways - these include one or more VET courses and allow a student to complete competencies and work towards achieving Certificate I or II in a vocational area. Students can study a variety of subjects that will prepare them for the workforce.
Trade Training - for students who are in a School-based Apprenticeship or Traineeship (SBAT) - see your Careers Adviser for more information. Students will enrol in a specific program that will allow them to gain an HSC, complete a TAFE trade qualification, and, by completing the right number of days in the workplace, the first year of an apprenticeship.
Tailored Program and Transition to Work - for students who have completed a Life Skills School Certificate, or those who have been identified as needing a tailored program in order to achieve an HSC.
Work Ready - this is a specific program for students who think that they may leave school when they get a job or when they turn 17.

Decision Time for Yr 11 in 2011

DECISION TIME for Yr 10 students!

It is now time to start gathering information about what subjects you will study in Years 11 and 12.

Students are being guided through a "decision time" process as a part of the transition to "new horizons" at The Entrance Campus in 2011.

You can find out some information in the booklet "Yr 11 Subject Choices" and also visit our SUBJECT EXPO which is on Tuesday 27 July from 4 - 7pm.
