The Social Sciences Faculty offers up to nine subjects each year including two that are targeted towards Vocational Education and Training students. We cater for students from across the spectrum with courses for all abilities, including those who intend to study at university as well as for a wide range of interests.
Each year we offer the following subjects:
Aboriginal Studies - which covers both modern and historical issues concerning Aboriginal people and the wider community. These are treated from an Aboriginal perspective and include research on a project of personal choice.
Business Studies prepares students for either a career in business, or equally, for entry to a University business course. This is typically our most popular course and offers students both theoretical knowledge of the functioning of a business as well as practical advice about commercial life.
Business Services is a Vocational Education and Training course that is focused on preparing students to work in a business or office situation. It is aimed at students who see their immediate future in the workforce and/or in a further program of study at TAFE. Success in this course rewards students with Certificate II in Business Services in addition to their HSC. See the VET tab for more information.
Economics is an academic course that gives a broad overview of the working of the Australian and global economies. It offers a challenging introduction that can be extended through a variety of University courses that rely on Economics as part of their program of study. Career opportunities for Economics students are numerous in both private business and Government sectors.
Geography is a traditional Social Sciences subject but one with a modern curriculum. It looks at contemporary issues including demographics, ecology and climate science. Geography students will expect to conduct fieldwork and as well as practical work with maps, statistics and data.
Legal Studies gives an overview of the workings of not only our Common and Legislative system of law but also relates it to current affairs and government. This is a course that may be used to prepare students for post-school study of the law as well as for careers in the police force. Many students describe Legal Studies as their most interesting subject and it can be undertaken with a career or further study in mind or simply as a subject based on developing general knowledge, written expression or skills in debate and opinion making.
Retail Services is the second of the Vocational Education and Training Courses offered and it is aimed at students currently working in a shop or retail environment (eg McDonalds) and those planning to go from school to the workplace, possibly with further training through TAFE. It also offers successful candidates a Certificate II in Retail Studies in addition to its contribution to the HSC. Refer to our VET tab for more information.
Society and Culture offers experience across a range of issues involving a variety of contrasting social and cultural groups. Information gathering, research and reporting form an important part of Society and Culture and give students the freedom to investigate issues that interest them.
Studies of Religion contrasts religious beliefs without making judgement about any of them. It seeks to inform the student about the richness of religious thought and belief and the origins of some of the world's great religions.
