The Preliminary Course focuses on developing a deeper understanding of traditional Aboriginal life and how the colonisation of Australia in 1788 and subsequent events through to around 1960 have affected Aboriginal peoples' relationships with their land, each other and their sense of identity. HSC students concentrate on the period from 1960 to the present studying the issues of Social Justice and Human Rights with a view to understanding what needs to be done to ensure that Indigenous peoples both here and overseas achieve social justice and human rights. The HSC course also offers the opportunity to develop a deeper knowledge of issues surrounding the importance of land as well as heritage and identity to Aboriginal peoples. Aboriginal Studies is an important area of study for anyone looking at a career in health, law, social work, education and government.
