English study is mandatory in NSW from Kindergarten to Year 12.
Students learn about the English language through written, spoken and visual texts of increasing complexity as they progress through their schooling.
An understanding of the English language is central to how we communicate and essential for intellectual, social and emotional development.
The study of English should develop a love of literature and learning and be challenging and enjoyable. It develops skills to enable students to experiment with ideas and expression, to become active, independent and lifelong learners, to work with each other and to reflect on their learning.
In Year 11 and 12, the study of English is mandatory.
Courses offered include:
- English Advanced
- English as an Alternative Language or Dialect (EAL/D)
- English Extension 1
- English Extension 2
- English Standard
- English Studies.
The English Faculty offers up to four different levels of English each year. While English is a compulsory subject, there is a course available to suit each student's pathway whether it be to go to university, to seek an apprenticeship or to simply just gain a HSC.

We offer the following English subjects:
Extension English is a one unit academic course which allows Advanced English Students to further pursue their interest in English. Students study both traditional and contemporary literature as well as composing a range of their own texts.
Advanced English is a challenging academic course suited to very capable English students who are interested in university studies. Students study a wide range of traditional texts including Shakespearean Drama as well as contemporary prescribed texts. They incorporate texts of their own choosing into these studies and compose a range of different texts.
Standard English is also an academic course for students who are hoping to achieve an ATAR. Students study a range of more contemporary prescribed texts and one less text than Advanced. Students still incorporate texts of their own choosing and compose a range of different texts.
English Studies is a more vocationally orientated course for students who do not seek an ATAR. I t has a strong literacy and multi-media focus with some texts and modules being negotiable. It counts as the required amount of English units to achieve a HSC but students don't sit for the HSC exam. Students compose a portfolio of a range different text types.
